Sveti Stefan, Yugoslavia
I visited Sveti Stefan twice: alone and heading north from Meteora in 1980, then again with Rudi and heading south towards Meteora in '82.
Originally, "Sweaty Steve" was an island village just off the coast of (what was then called but isn't anymore) Yugoslavia. Sometime in I think the '30s, though, the government relocated the villagers and turned the village into a resort hotel, built a causeway connecting it to the mainland and turned the island into a sort of peninsula.
When Rudi and I were there, we wanted to spend the night, but the place was booked solid and we wound up in a horrible, frigid domatia not too far away. We spent several lovely hours stretched out on the beach to the left of the causeway, though and, if memory serves, ate that night an incredible meal of some massive mystery fish.
