Washington, DC
Washington and San Francisco are my favorite American cities. Over the years, I've had many friends and family members who've lived in the DC area cousins Jerry and Cathy Herskowitz, cousins Vicki Schulkin and Lee Jones, friends Mark and Sally Wachter, Catherine and Eric Anderson, Tom and Barbara Crain -- and although I've visited our nation's capital dozens of times, the only time I ever stayed in a hotel there was when I attended a CMA conference at the Hyatt around 1999.
There is so much of interest to see and do in this town! Particular favorites are the Air and Space Museum, the National Art Gallery, the Hirschhorn and its outdoor sculpture garden, the Smithsonian Castle (which you see in the photo), the Lincoln and Jefferson and FDR memorials, the Vietnam Wall, the Korean War Memorial, the Holocaust Museum, the craggy statue of Albert Einstein, the "Awakening" giant in Potomac Park, the shops and restaurants along M Street in Georgetown, the National Archives, the open-air seafood market at the Marina, King Street and the Torpedo Factory and the waterfront in nearby Old Town Alexandria ... the list goes on.
From 2006 to 2008, I lived in southern Maryland, about 45 minutes by car from DC, and got into the city regularly; there were always new things to see and do, and always old favorites to re-explore. Then from 2010 to 2020 I lived in northern Virginia, a little closer to the city ... but somehow I rarely went in unless out-of-town company wanted to see the sights.
