Ann Arbor, Michigan
Ann Arbor is the first place I ever lived on my own, away from my family. I moved there in the fall of 1969, lived first in West Quad, then in a couple of different apartments. It was in Ann Arbor that I decided to study film, in Ann Arbor that I took steps towards an eventual career in teaching, in Ann Arbor that I met Rudi Goldman, who remains one of my dearest friends.
I lived in "A Squared" from 1969 to 1973 as a University of Michigan undergraduate, then returned from '74 to '76 to teach at Community High School and earn my masters. I still go back for occasional visits, still love strolling across the Diag on a spring day and poking through the shops in the Nichols Arcade. I keep thinking that, some day, I just might find myself living in "the City of Trees" again. We shall see....
