Mots D’Heures: Gousses, Rames

Discovered, Edited and Annotated by Luis d'Antin Van Rooten

Oh, this is a fun book! I remember my junior high school librarian pulling me aside one day and shoving a copy into my hands. “Read this,” she said. I looked it over and handed it back and told her that I didn’t speak (or read) a word of French. She thrust it back at me and insisted, “Read it! Read it out loud.” So I sat down at a library table and paged through the damn thing for half an hour or more, whispering the unfamiliar words not exactly out loud but more out soft, until suddenly a light bulb went on over my head and I actually got it.

Once I did, I rushed through the rest of the slender volume in utter delight, laughing out — yes, out loud at the beauty of it. Here, for your own enjoyment is the first of its 40 poems. This link will take you to several more. And then, when you decide to buy the book for yourself, there’s a recent reprint available for under $10 from Amazon. C’est tres jolie!
