"The City of Light"

Laurie and I spent a week in Paris in January of 2019, and while we were there I scribbled some notes for a possible short story. When we got home, I wrote it, but it just didn't quite seem to gel. Something was missing, and I couldn't figure out what. Three months later, on April 15, Notre Dame caught fire, and when I got over the horror of the event I realized that that was what my story needed: Notre Dame ablaze.

I revised the story and was happy with the result. So was EQMM editor Janet Hutchings, and "The City of Light" appeared in the magazine's March/April 2021 issue, two years to the month after the cathedral burned....

In January 2024, I read the story for EQMM's monthly podcast.
