"Josh Pachter appeared in EQMM's Department of First Stories in 1968, while still a teenager. Over the years nearly fifty more of his stories have seen print. In the summer of 2015, a collection of stories featuring Mahboob Chaudri, the series policeman he created while living and working in Bahrain, was brought out in print under the title The Tree of Life and in e-format as The Mahboob Chaudri Mystery Megapack. His latest work is a novel in collaboration with Belgian writer Bavo Dhooge, entitled Styx."
One of the shortest stories I've ever written, and definitely one of the creepiest. I was delighted to have it appear in 2016, which is EQMM's 75th anniversary year.
On October 7, 2017, I read the story aloud at a competitive event called "Noir at the Bar: 6 Minutes in Hell" at the Wonderland Ballroom in Washington, DC. I was up against defending champion Eryk Pruitt and a field of talent that included Art Taylor, Tara Laskowski, Laura Ellen Scott, Nik Korpon, Amber Sparks, Austin Camacho, and host Ed Aymar. The prize was a beautiful engraved sword, and — as you can see from the photo — I won!
If you'd like to read "Selfie" — whether aloud or to yourself — you'll find it here.
