"The Night of Power"
"The exotic area of Bahrain on the Persian Gulf is well known to Josh Pachter, who lived and worked there before moving to his present home in West Germany. Pachter's name can be found these days in all the American mystery magazines, and I think his most successful stories to date have been those involving his sleuth Mahboob Chaudri in the mysteries of a region still too little known and understood by the Western world."
from Ed Hoch's introduction
I think this may well be the best of the Mahboob Chaudri stories, and I was delighted to see Ed Hoch call it one of the best mysteries of its year. You can read "The Night of Power" here.
Hoch's "Honor Roll" at the end of the book also lists "The Qatar Causeway" as one of the year's best stories.
